PURPOSE: A decoding method in a Viterbi decoder is provided to improve the decoding process speed by obtaining multiple decoding bits through one trace-back operation. CONSTITUTION: Survival paths for decoding one data converges one survival path as time goes by. At a current time, a path scale computing with respect to each state is performed. Thereafter, survival information is stored on a register. At this time, when it is trace-backed to a decoding depth, one path is survived at most case and a trace-back is performed along the survived path. As a result, decoded data in 63rd depth at time T is similar to that in 64th depth at time T+1. With one trace-back, one data is decoded in 63rd decoding depth and another data is decoded in 64th decoding depth at next clock.
