PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a treatment system having a high recovery rate while keeping the permeated flux high and the quality of the permeated liquid stable over a long period of time and a method for operating the treatment system. SOLUTION: When this treatment system is backwashed, the water 2 to be filtered is supplied to a reverse osmosis membrane separation apparatus 51, filtered by reverse osmosis and separated into the permeated water 3 and the concentrated water 4. The water 4 obtained by the apparatus 51 is supplied to a spiral membrane element 10 as washing water through a pipeline 21 and another pipeline 21a. In this case, the water 4 is pressurized by a supply pump 104 and a separation membrane is backwashed under the back pressure higher than 0.05 MPa and equal to or lower than 0.3 MPa.
