PURPOSE: A method for controlling soft handoff of a mobile station in a mobile communication system is provided to minimize soft handoff of excessively occupying wireless resources, in order to effectively use the wireless resources as minimizing call cut-off during the soft handoff, thereby increasing capacity of the wireless resources. CONSTITUTION: A mobile station performs an initialization operation(401). The mobile station decides whether currently registered active sets are more than two(402). If so, the mobile station checks whether an energy value of an active set having maximum energy strength is higher than a 'T_EXCELLENT' value(403). If so, the mobile station analyzes whether a flag variable value is '0'(404). If so, the mobile station sets a flag to '1', backs up a current 'T-TDROP' value in a memory, sets a 'T_TDROP' value to be used to '0', backs up a current 'T_ADD' value in the memory, and replaces the 'T_ADD' value with a 'T_ADD_HIGHER' value(405). If the flag variable value is not '0', the mobile station maintains a speech channel state(408).
