PURPOSE: An ATM-based MPLS(Multi Protocol Label Switching)-LER(Label Edge Router) system is provided to reciprocally share connections by using preset internal connections when connectively setting for IP/MPLS packet transmissions, thereby reducing the number of entire connections. CONSTITUTION: Many LIM(Line Interface Modules)(21-1,21-2) process ATM traffic by interfacing with an IP equipment or an LSR. Many IP input FEs(Forwarding Engines)(22-1,22-2) perform forwarding functions, and transmit IP or MPLS packets received through each LIM(21-1,21-2) to a destination. A switch fabric(26) switches ATM cells transmitted from each IP input FE(22-1,22-2) to proper output ports. Many IP output FEs(28-1,28-2) perform forwarding functions, and transmit the IP or MPLS packets to the destination through the switch fabric(26).
