A perpendicular magnetic recording medium (31) including a substrate (32), a soft-magnetic backing layer (34) formed on the substrate (32), a magnetic recording layer (38) having perpendicular magnetic anisotropy formed on the backing layer (34), and a leakage magnetic field control layer (40) having ferrimagnetism formed on the magnetic recording layer (38), is provided. The leakage magnetic field control layer (40) is exchange-coupled to the magnetic recording layer (38) antiferromagnetically or ferrimagnetically to thereby suppress the influence of leakage magnetic fields from the backing layer (34) and the magnetic recording layer (38) and reduce the medium noise.
