PURPOSE: An instant messenger for learning language and a method for operating the same are provided to transmit a general instant messenger, to search contents stored in a web server, and to display a word requested from a user by accessing to a language dictionary stored in the web server. CONSTITUTION: If an instant messenger for learning language is started and a member ID and a password are inputted(S301,S302), a server system transmits the member ID and password, and a log-in is requested(S303). If the log-in is successful(S304), an instant messenger screen including a menu area, a channel area, an icon button area, a contents display area, and a dictionary search area is displayed, and contact list being transmitted from the server system is displayed in the display area(S306). If a general instant messenger service is requested from a user(S307), an instant messenger is transmitted and received to an on-line contact objected computer through the Internet(S308). If the user searches one channel, the lower detailed items of the channel are displayed. If the user selects one lower detailed item(S309), a web page address linked with the lower detailed item is transmitted to the server system, and contents of the web page are displayed in the contents display area(S310). If the user inputs a keyword and requests a dictionary search(S111), the keyword is transmitted to the server system, a dictionary search result is displayed on the contents display area(S312,S314).
