The detector comprises a casing (10) with a detection face (12) and delivers an output signal whose state is a function of the position of a target or of the frequency of passage of a target. The detector can be parameterized by an operator by means of the operator dialogue separated from the detector and communicating with the detector by the dialogue signals transmitted through the connecting cable (20). <??>The dialogue means are integrated in a connection block (30) which is connected to the casing (10) by the cable (20) which transmits the dialogue signals and the detector output signal. The connection block (30) comprises a connector (33) for further transmission of the detector output signal, and the dialogue means which comprise a push-button (31) and the dialogue indicator (32) which is a light-emitting diode (LED). The detector casing (10) also comprises the output indicator (16) which is also a light-emitting diode (LED) indicating the image of the detector output signal. The connecting cable (20) has a moulding at the detector casing (10) also containing an internal connector which is of the same type as the external connector (33), for example of type M12. The connecting cable (20) is detachable from the internal connector on the detector casing, which can be connected to an external cable for the output of the detector signal. The detector output signal is transmitted by two or three wires according to the technology utilized for connections, in particular of type a.c./d.c. with two wires, or d.c. with three wires. The dialogue signals are transmitted in the same manner.
