The passenger compartment comprises an instrument panel (4) fixed on and above a crosspiece (9) and a rigid compartment (10) mounted on the crosspiece in a space separating it from a fire partition (2) isolating the passenger compartment from the engine compartment (1). The protection means comprises a shoe (20) mounted on the partition so as to push the rigid compartment beyond the space when a deformation of the partition, due to collision, drives the shoe against the compartment.
