Adaptive print driver selection

Print tasks having certain document types are more efficiently and effectively printed using a particular page description language. This invention relates to an adaptive print driver 25 for a system comprising a plurality of different page description language (PDL) drivers 47, which automatically selects the most appropriate page description language driver for a print task based on the determined document type of the print task. The PDL driver selection system 45 transmits the information corresponding to the print task to the selected PDL driver 47. In alternative embodiments described, the PDL driver can be selected based on the shortest print time (e.g. for an unknown document type), or based on document qualities such as colour, image or font.
