PURPOSE: An apparatus for switching sound of a VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) system and a method thereof are provided to switch a signal by displaying envelope voltage of a played audio signal on an OSD screen, thereby preventing problems due to deterioration of a tape. CONSTITUTION: A voice processor(260) checks a signal inputted by a user from a key input part(290). If a play mode is inputted, the voice processor outputs envelope voltage of an FM(Frequency Modulation) signal to a comparator(221). A microprocessor(222) checks whether the envelope voltage output from the comparator is larger than reference voltage. If the envelope voltage is smaller than or equal to the reference voltage, the microprocessor outputs a control signal for outputting characters of recommending an AM(Amplitude Modulation) mode to an OSD(On Screen Display) circuit part(250). The OSD circuit part outputs a character signal to a monitor through a video signal unit(230). The user selects AM voice signal or FM signal through the key input part. If the user selects the AM voice signal, the microprocessor transmits the control signal to the voice processor for switching voice output into an AM modulating signal.
