The polynucleotide of SEQ ID NO:1 encodes for the polycythaemia rubra vera (pvr) gene. The polypeptide of SEQ ID NO:2 may be N-glycosolated. Pharmaceutical compositions comprising the polypeptide, polynucleotide or antibodies directed against the polypeptide with PVR for treating pancytopenias and pancytopathies in the bone marrow and in the circulation. Also described is a process to detect polycythaemia vera with the antibodies and the use of the polypeptide as a growth factor.
