Water flow control for a planting system

A planting system for regulating the water supply to a plant 22 has a water-impermeable liner 28 containing a plant growing medium 30 (e.g. soil) where the plant growing medium has a preferably perforated drainage pipe 40 located within the liner and surrounded by particulate material 42 (e.g. gravel) to convey the drained water to a desired location. Also a paving system 24 having a surface layer with an island 26 (such as a hole or a trench) for receipt of a plant in combination with such a planting system.
