PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus and method that can prevent video recording from being interrupted in half way. SOLUTION: A video recording time for recording a program and a bit rate of an MPEG system stream outputted from an encoder board 213 are set, and a microprocessor 201 calculates a required capacity being a recording capacity required for the video recording on the basis of the video recording time and the bit rate. Then the microprocessor reserves an essential area being a recording area with the required capacity or over in a hard disk 212 and the essential area records the program received by a TV tuner 213A.
