摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium wherein medium performance e.g. higher power, lower noise, etc., is improved by improving orientation properties of a magnetic recording layer, reducing an initial growing layer and decreasing a grain size of the magnetic recording layer. SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording medium wherein at least a non-magnetic base layer, the magnetic recording layer, a protective film, a liquid lubricating layer are successively laminated on a non-magnetic substrate, the magnetic recording layer consists of ferromagnetic grains and non-magnetic grain boundary phases consisting essentially of an oxide surrounding the ferromagnetic grains, the non-magnetic base layer consists of a metal or an alloy having a crystal structure of hcp and a seed layer consisting of a metal or an alloy having a crystal structure of fcc is imparted to the lower side of the non-magnetic base layer.
