<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus and an image forming method by which a density control factor is accurately and efficiently set. <P>SOLUTION: Two processing modes whose number of steps is different from each other are previously prepared. In the 1st processing mode, the provisional value of optimum developing bias is obtained by changing developing bias in a wide range (the entire variable area of developing bias), and further the optimum developing bias is determined while changing the developing bias in a narrow range (about 1/3 of the variable area) based on the provisional value. In the 2nd processing mode, the optimum developing bias is determined while changing the developing bias in the narrow range (about 1/3 of the variable area) including the previous optimum developing bias. At the time of restoring from sleep, a processing mode in accordance with a sleep time is selectively performed to determine the optimum developing bias. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
