PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery prevented from explosion by opening a safety valve with an appropriate timing when a short-circuit is generated, capable of installing the safety valve coping with the size-increase of a terminal. SOLUTION: For the secondary battery comprising a closed box-shaped container 2, electrolyte liquid enclosed in the container 2, electrode plates arranged inside the container 2 in a state of being immersed in the electrolyte liquid, electrodes 12, 13 formed at the upper part of the container 2, penetrating through the container 2 and connected to the electrode plates, and a safety valve 14 formed at the inside of the container, releasing the pressure in the container 2 when the pressure becomes higher than a prescribed pressure; safety valves 14 are formed to adjacent side walls 5, 5 of the container 2 respectively. As the safety valve is formed to the side wall 5 of which, the direction is same with the flowing direction of generated gas, the pressure in the container 2 can be released by opening the safety valve with an appropriate timing.
