<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader in which the dispersion in the MTF deterioration of image data caused by a location in a main scan direction is suppressed. <P>SOLUTION: An MTF (modulation transfer function) correcting circuit 8c is provided with a pixel location counter 8s for determining the positions in the main scan direction, of pixels to which read image data correspond, a parameter generating part 8t, a spatial filter arithmetic part 8u, a first line buffer 8v and a second line buffer 8w. The parameter generating part 8t stores a parameter A of a larger coefficient and a parameter B of a smaller coefficient into the spatial filter of 3×3 size and concerning image data located on both side terminals in the main scan direction where the MTF deterioration is considerable, the parameter A is selected to strengthen edge emphasis rather than image data located in the center of the main scan direction.
