PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize the tone scale of an input digital image from an arbitrary source to a printer to be used, known printer characteristics or processing space such as ROMM. SOLUTION: The method for processing data from a digital image in order to optimize the tone scale of the digital image to the printer to be used or processing space, is provided with a step for adjusting the gain and offset of input image data for occupying the full input range of the printer or processing space, a step for adjusting the shadow slope and highlight slope of the input image data for moving the distribution of the image data toward distribution expected for the general image of the printer or processing space and a step for using a gamma correction stage for moving the mean level of the image data toward a level expected for the printer or processing space.
