<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize a heat waste of a battery and an electric power demand in a spacecraft and further maximize a charging capacity of the battery in a cold charging method of a nickel metal hydride battery generally used in the spacecraft. <P>SOLUTION: This is the charging method of the nickel metal hydride battery including a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and an electrolyte after discharging the battery, and composed of (a) a process wherein the battery is put to a high charging rate for a period until the battery temperature rises at least by ΔT<SB>1</SB>compared with the local minimum battery temperature, (b) a process wherein the battery charging level is switched into a lower charging rate compared with that of the process (a) for a period until the battery temperature rises at least by ΔT<SB>2</SB>compared with the local minimum battery temperature, (c) a process wherein the battery charging level is switched into a lower charging rate compared with that of the process (b) for a period from about 30 to 60 minutes prior to the next planned discharge, and (d) a process wherein the battery is switched into a pulse state charge on the same level as that of the high charging rate of the process (a). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
