PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems in the conventional aligning method in which adjusting elements are relatively transferred to maximize the output of light coupled from a light emitting element to an optical fiber and in which a great number of measurements are needed, with a long period required for an aligning work, for example. SOLUTION: In this method, an image pickup unit with a two-dimensional image pickup means is arranged movably between a light emitting element and an optical fiber, with an optical path formed from each of the light emitting element and the optical fiber to the image pickup unit. In the former optical path, a light scattering plate is arranged, with an image formed by the light from the light emitting element, and with an image picked up by the image pickup means. In addition, the coupling end of the optical fiber is imaged by the image pickup means and, from the position on their two-dimensional image and the position of the image pickup unit, each three- dimensional position is measured of the light converging point and the coupling end. Then, on the basis of these positions, the coupling end of the optical fiber is guided to the proximity of the converging point on the light emitting element side, with the alignment performed by measuring the intensity of the light coupled from the light emitting element to the optical fiber.
