The digital word communications system has digital word routing mechanisms (11,12,13,14) with communication links transmitted in packets with headers. Following transmission over a link (15) of a packet from a router the non coded value is compressed following an entropy code, and the recoded value is stored instead of the coded value. The routing receiver has a second store taking the non coded value and compressing it following entropy code recoding, and replaces the coded value.
