The separating and placing device comprises two first parallel endless chain conveyors. The conveyors run in a horizontal plane around two vertical axes spaced in the longitudinal direction. Each conveyor comprises separation half elements (32) which cooperate to form individual compartments (3) in which the objects (1) can be housed and driven one by one. The objects are placed by gravity in a receptacle (5) of a second conveyor (4). An Independent claim is included for a method of sorting fragile objects with the installation.
