<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device which changes a quantity of incident light to an optical modulation means without changing the optical output intensity of a lamp and which effects excellent expressive power of videos and adaptability to an operating environment. <P>SOLUTION: The projection type display device 30 comprises an illuminator 1, liquid crystal light valves 22 to 24 to modulate light emitted from the illuminator 1, and a projection lens 26 to project the light modulated by the liquid crystal light valves 22 to 24. The illuminator 1 is provided with a light source 2, fly-eye lenses 3 and 4 to uniformize light illuminance distribution incident from the light source 2, and a liquid crystal element 5 for light control which is installed on an optical axis of light emitted from the light source 2 and controls the intensity of the light emitted from the light source 2. The liquid crystal element 5 is controlled in a light quantity per unit time emitted from the illuminator 1 by driving in time-division based on external information. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
