PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to form fringe field between a common electrode and a pixel electrode to improve viewing angle of a liquid crystal display. CONSTITUTION: Gate lines are formed on the first substrate(110), and data lines(161) are formed on the first substrate to intersect the gate lines. A plurality of thin film transistors are connected to the gate lines and data lines. A sub-electrode(166) is formed in parallel with the data lines. A plurality of pixel electrodes(181,182) are located between the data line and sub-electrode and respectively connected to the thin film transistors. A black matrix is formed on the second substrate, corresponding to the sub-electrode. A common electrode is formed on the black matrix. A liquid crystal layer is formed between the first and second substrates.
