PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove a pattern artifact while improving or maintaining the compactness of dots. SOLUTION: The image processing system and a method are for performing rank-order error diffusion. The system is provided with a pixel ranker for receiving information on one set of selected neighboring pixels and assigning a rank to the selected neighboring pixels on the basis of the pixel values of the neighboring pixels, a thresholder for comparing the pixel value of a pixel of interest with a threshold and generating the comparison result, a marker for determining marking on the basis of the comparison result and an error diffuser for operating an error value on the basis of the pixel value of the pixel of the interest and the determination of marking and changing at least one pixel value of the selected neighboring pixels on the basis of the ranks of the selected neighboring pixels and the calculated error value.
