<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image converting element which can be formed to large area, has superior spatial uniformity, resolution, and sensitivity, is easy to manufacture, and has high productivity, and its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: The image converting element 10 is constituted by laminating a glass substrate 12a, a transparent electrode 14a, a photoconductive layer 16, a shading layer 18, a dielectric mirror 20, an optical modulating layer 22, a transparent electrode 14b, and a glass substrate 12b. The photoconductive layer 16 is formed of a member having avalanche intensifying operation and the optical modulating layer 22 is formed of electrooptic crystal. The optical modulating layer 22 is formed by grinding work and abrasive work of the surface of the electrooptic crystal plate while the electrooptic crystal plate is bonded to the transparent electrode 14b side of the glass plate 12a.
