PURPOSE: A method for loading software in a device controller of an ATM exchange is provided to decide whether to exchange a software block for many device controllers, and to determine whether to load the software according to a decided result, thereby improving system stability and reliability. CONSTITUTION: When a device controller restarts(S11), a booter of the device controller confirms whether software exists in a nonvolatile storage space(S12). If so(S13), the booter requests to transmit a current software version of a loading server(S15). The loading server retrieves information of a software block to be used in the device controller(S16), reads version information included in a header of the block, and transmits current software version information to the device controller(S17). The device controller compares the current software version information with stored software version information(S18), and decides whether the information is equal(S19). If not, the device controller requests to load the software of the loading server(S21), and performs a loading procedure(S22).
