PURPOSE: A single-plate liquid-crystal-on-silicon display and a method for driving the display are provided to produce an inexpensive virtual display by using only a single LCD panel and improve resolution of image. CONSTITUTION: A single-plate LCOS display includes a PBS(30), a dichronic mirror(40), reflecting mirrors(61,62,63), RGB shutters(51,52,53), an LCD panel(70), and a magnifying lens(80). The PBS transmits or reflect incident light. The dichroic mirror divides lights transmitted or reflected by the PBS into R, G and B beams according to the wavelengths of the lights to disperse the beams in different directions. The reflecting mirrors respectively reflect the R, G and B colors dispersed by the dichronic mirror. The RGB shutters control luminance values of the reflected R, G and B colors. The LCD panel controls a gray level into a predetermined gray value when the reflected beams are reflected or transmitted by the PBS. The magnifying lens magnifies the beams reflected or transmitted through the LCD panel to display the beams on a screen(90).
