PURPOSE: An Internet protocol telephone system and an operating method therefor are provided to connect an external CODEC device expansively supporting many CODECs to an existing Internet protocol telephone, thereby improving CODEC performance of the existing Internet protocol telephone. CONSTITUTION: An Internet protocol telephone system(100) comprises as follows. An IP phone(120) performs communication by using an IP. An external CODEC device(110) supports a CODEC function in the IP phone(120). A cable(130) connects the IP phone(120) with the external CODEC device(110). The IP phone(120) has a mandatory CODEC, and has the first terminal(121) and the second terminal(122) connected to outside. The external CODEC device(110) comprises as follows. An external signal input terminal(111) inputs a signal from an external device. An external signal output terminal(112) outputs a signal to the external device. An IP phone connection terminal(113) connects with the IP phone(120).
