PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which transition from splay to bend deformation or from bend to splay deformation can be quickly and certainly brought about.

SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a first substrate, a second substrate placed opposite to the first substrate and a liquid crystal disposed between the first and second substrates. The liquid crystal layer is provided with a splay deformation region in which the transition from the splay to bend deformation or from the bend to splay deformation take place corresponding to an applied voltage and a transition nucleus region to be a nucleus to trigger the transition in the splay deformation region. The transition nucleus region is provided with a plurality of first transition nucleus regions formed along a first direction and a plurality of second transition nucleus regions formed along a second direction different from the first direction. The splay deformation region is provided with a plurality of first splay deformation regions with a first width in the second direction and a plurality of second splay deformation regions with a second width narrower than the first width in the second direction. A plurality of the first splay deformation regions contain two of the first splay deformation regions continued via one out of a plurality of the second splay deformation regions.
