PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element which can suppress short circuit of upper and lower electrodes over a long period of time, and can maintain the luminescence characteristic. SOLUTION: In the organic EL element, in which the positive electrode 2 as a lower electrode, organic layers 3 to 6 containing a luminescence layer 3, which consists of an organic material, and a negative electrode 8 as an upper electrode, which consists of a metal, are laminated one by one on the one surface of a glass substrate 1, the actual stress of the negative electrode 8 is -500 MPa or more.
