Device for coating the surface of a metal strip (4) with a metallic coating (8) comprises a channel (5) having a gap with larger dimensions than the width and thickness of the strip to be coated; and a feed unit (3) for introducing the metal strip into the channel and for simultaneously protecting the metal strip from the external atmosphere. Closure units having opposite-lying closing elements (16a, 16b) are arranged between the channel and the feed unit. Moving elements for the closing elements move the elements between an open and a closed position. The feed unit and the channel are connected in a gas-tight manner. Preferred Features: The closing elements have sealing units made from an elastic and temperature-resistant material. The channel is formed as a coating channel through which the metal strip is guided and through which the molten coating material simultaneously flows.
