A spacer (17) between the as-joined proximal ends (6,7) of the forceps and the grip faces prevents or limits the degree of convergence of the two arms (2,3). The gap (16) can adjust lengthways via elastic notching and the spacer (17) is elastically compressible. A scale (25) on one of the arms (2) determines the position of the spacer (17) and one arm at least has endstops (20,21) to limit the arm convergence.
