[Class 7 (ii)] A combined air cleaner and intake silencer comprises a filter surmounted by a resonating chamber. -Air, entering through slots 25, in the casing 1 surrounding the filter 33, passes through a small inlet 32, offset from the slots 24, in a baffle 29, the space 45 forming a resonating chamber, and then flows through passage 44 and the filter 33 and out through conduit 11. The baffle can be deformed at 29 so that the space 45 can be adjusted in relation to the size of the inlet 32 to suppress the predominant sound frequencies. The two parts 1, 2 of the casing are held together by a bolt 20 and connecting member 15, the joins being sealed by gaskets 28, 14; the baffle may be spot-welded to the part 1. A sump 12 is filled with cleansing liquid such as engine oil up to the indentation 5 so that the air blows part of the. liquid into the filtering substance 38, which may be hair, vegetable fibre, wire or metallic ribbons. |
