A simple connection arrangement is provided for inter-communicating a portable computer (10) and a desktop computer (11). Each computer (10,11) is provided with a 2:1 optical coupler (36,59) for transmitting and receiving signals to/from a duplex fiber-optic cable (30) used to interconnect the computers. The cable (30) is unpluggable at one or both ends and avoids crossover problems. A standard protocol can be operated across the link established by the fiber-optic cable (30). The desktop computer (11) preferably includes functionality (51) enabling communication to be extended into a connected computer network (71).
