GAIN EQUALIZATION SYSTEM AND METHOD

A power equalization system (401) and method for use in an optical transmission system are provided. The power equalization system (401) includes an optical line (410) including at least one transmission channel and a management line (412). The transmission system further includes a plurality of amplifiers (404), a plurality of optical spectrum analyzers (406) and a plurality of equalizers (408). The equalizers (408) are co-located with a portion of the amplifiers (404) and at least one optical spectrum analyzer (406) is not co-located with the equalizers (408). The optical spectrum analyzers (406) provide analysis data via the management line (412) to the non-co-located equalizers (408) for use by the equalizers (408) and equalizing the power of the channels.
