Treatment of circulating water in a paint shop by adding a coagulant or dispersant and separating coagulated or dispersed paint solids from a clear water phase comprises passing the clear water phase through an ion exchanger before returning it to the water circuit. The anion- and/or cation-loaded ion exchanger is regenerated and re-used and the regeneration effluent is evaporated or disposed of.
