PURPOSE: An auto-tensioner of a chain by using a diaphragm is provided to adjust the tension of a timing belt by using pressure of engine oil, and to improve the durability by preventing momentary excessive tension of the chain with deforming the diaphragm in increasing pressure. CONSTITUTION: A lower pressure chamber(32) and a high pressure chamber(33) are formed in a body(31) of an auto-tensioner, and the end of a plunger is inserted to the side of the high pressure chamber and operated by hydraulic pressure. A spring is formed in the high pressure chamber to elastically support the inner end of the plunger, and a check ball is formed in the end of the spring to open and close a passage(38). The clearance is formed in the outer periphery of the plunger, and pressure is buffered by discharging fluid in applying hydraulic pressure from the low pressure chamber to the high pressure chamber. A diaphragm(50) is formed in the front of the passage to lower pressure of the high pressure chamber in transmitting high pressure or excessive tension of the chain, and an operation groove(52) is formed in the body to deform the diaphragm. The endurance is improved by preventing excessive tension or pressure with damping efficiently.
