METHOD FOR ESTIMATING MOTION FOR ENCODING MOVING PICTURE

PURPOSE: A method for estimating motion for encoding a moving picture is provided to minimize an error in unilateral and bilateral moving picture communication. CONSTITUTION: An encoder executes a motion estimation process by searching for a block equal to or similar to a macro block of the current frame to be encoded from the previous frame(S101). An error value D(x,y) is obtained by comparing the macro block of the current frame and a block of the previous frame defined by the current motion vector(S102). The number of pixels E(I) encoded into an intra macro block and the number of pixels E(C) encoded into a copied macro block are obtained from the number of pixels of the previous frame(S103-S104). The size of the current motion vector MV(x,y) is obtained(S105). A whole error D_total is obtained by using D(x,y), E(I), E(C), and MV(x,y)(S106). A motion vector minimizing the whole error D_total is estimated and the estimated motion vector is used as the optimum motion vector(S107).
