PURPOSE: A counter and a method for detecting a bank note type by using an image processing scheme are provided to sense a bank note type by capturing an image of the bank note and processing the image when plural bank notes are put into the bank note counter. CONSTITUTION: The counter comprises a bank note input opening(10), a feeder(14), a synchronization sensor(30), an image capturing sensor(32), a counting sensor(34), and an accumulator(40). The feeder(14) feeds the bank notes, put in the bank note input opening(10), sheet by sheet into a passageway(12). The synchronization sensor(30) detects the counting start time, and the counting sensor(34), installed on the passageway(12), counts the bank notes fed by the feeder(14). The accumulator(40) accumulates the bank notes counted by the counting sensor(34). The image capturing sensor(32), installed between the synchronization sensor(30) and the counting sensor(34), synchronizes the rotation angle of the rollers, feeding the bank notes, with the movement distance of the fed bank note, and calculates a similarity between a captured image and a reference image.
