1,260,432. Safety belts. BORG-WARNER CORP. 12 Sept., 1969 [4 Oct., 1968], No. 45226/69. Heading A3V. A safety belt is stored, partially behind panelling 14, in a taut condition by the spring tension in cord 30, which is relieved, during use of the belt, by latch 69. On being withdrawn through a slot in panelling 14, a crossbar 84, carrying the terminal loop 93 of the belt 16, is captured in slots (58), 59 of a bracket (12), secured to the roof 13 of the vehicle and locked therein by the latch 69. After use, the tongue (36) of the belt clasp is hung on hook 34, thereby pivoting member 27 and releasing latch 69, by means of cord 42. The slack is retracted behind the panelling as cord (30) is re-wound on spring drum 26. The ends of cross-bar 84 are guided in flexible elastomeric rails (18), 19. In a modification, the rails are replaced by guide surfaces (101, 102, Fig. 3 not shown), at one or both ends of the travel. In another form, the end of the belt (116, Fig. 4, not shown) is secured to an anchor bar (176), in bracket (112), and is looped around the travelling cross-bar (184). |
