PURPOSE: A device of automatically setting an IP address is provided to automatically assign and set a usable IP address when a network environment is changed in a portable terminal, thereby enabling a network manager not to worry about the assignment of the IP address. CONSTITUTION: A subnet deciding module(110) decides subnet based on ARP(Address Resolution Protocol) packets that are identified the most. A gateway IP address sensing module(120) determines an IP address included in one of the ARP packets as a gateway IP address. An empty IP address sensing module(130) makes ping packets by all computer systems connected to the subnet, checks whether the ping packets respond, and senses an empty IP address. A control module(100) sequentially operates each module(110,120,130) by firstly sensing a subnet connection, and stores the IP address set by the empty IP address sensing module(130) in a network environment information database(160) by corresponding to a specific identifier.
