To form the gas mixture, for protective gas arc welding, argon is used together with at least one additional dosing gas at 0.001-0.7 vol.%. The argon is taken by evaporation of a liquid phase as a premixture with a dosing gas in a concentration of 0.005-1.0 vol.%, preferably up to 0.8 vol.% beside helium and/or argon. The dosing gas is nitrogen oxide (NO), nitrogen (N2), oxygen (O2) or carbon dioxide (CO2).
