PURPOSE: A circuit and a method for reducing self refresh consumed current are provided to reduce the current consumption by applying the operational current of a temperature sensor portion only during a predetermined time. CONSTITUTION: The device includes a clock signal generation portion(310), a sampling clock signal generation portion(320), a temperature sensor portion(330), and a latch portion(340). The clock signal generation portion generates a clock signal of a predetermined period. The sampling clock signal generation portion generates a predetermined sampling clock signal according to the clock signal. The temperature sensor portion controls an active state or an inactive state of an operation in response to the sampling clock signal and generates a temperature signal to indicate the operational temperature of the semiconductor memory device. The latch portion receives the temperature signal and generates a period selection signal to select a self refresh period in response to the sampling clock signal.
