PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling side pictures of a TV and a method thereof are provided to remove vertical lines generated at boundary parts of a video picture and side pictures by controlling the brightness of the side picture. CONSTITUTION: A power supply unit(50) provides power to a display unit(40) to realize a video signal received through a tuner(10). A beam current detecting unit(51) detects beam current of a video picture and side pictures provided to the display unit from the power supply unit. A voltage converter(52) converts the beam current into voltage form. A control unit(60) controls the beam current detecting unit to detect the beam current in the case of realizing a 4:3 display mode and outputs a control signal to control brightness of the picture according to a voltage difference between the video picture and the side pictures.
