A vehicle drive system (20) for a hybrid electric vehicle includes an engine (22), which includes a crankshaft assembly (24), and a motor (30), which includes a main rotor shaft (28). The vehicle drive system (20) also includes a transmission (42), which includes an input shaft (40), and second clutch (38) which selectively engages the main rotor shaft (28) and the transmission input shaft (40). An accessory drive mechanism (48) is driven by the main rotor shaft (28) and drives a vehicle accessory. The accessory may be an air conditioning compressor and include a clutch (56) coupled between the accessory drive mechanism (48) and the compressor.
