PURPOSE: An EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system for improving the defrost performance of a vehicle and a control method thereof are provided to improve the defrost performance by increasing the temperature of the engine cooling water passing through an EGR cooler. CONSTITUTION: An EGR system comprises an EGR line(13) through which a portion of exhaust gas recirculates of an exhaust manifold(11) to an intake manifold(12), an EGR cooler(14) installed at the middle of the EGR line and performing heat exchange, EGR valves(16a,16b) installed at the front and rear portions of the EGR line and controlling the flow of the EGR gas by the signal of an ECU(Electronic Control Unit,15), and a return line(18) making the exhaust gas return to an exhaust pipe(17) by passing through the EGR cooler. During cold starting or idling of a vehicle, the EGR valves cut off the discharge of the exhaust gas to the exterior and the inflow of the exhaust gas to the intake manifold. The exhaust gas passes through the EGR cooler, and the cooling water of a heater(20) is increased.
