A locating device is disclosed which includes: positional data receiving means (6) for receiving data relating to the geographical position of the locating device; data storage means (12) for storing data relating to the position of the underground object (16); means for comparing the stored data with the positional data; and means for producing a warning signal when said means for comparing indicates that the underground object is within a predetermined distance of the locating device. <??>In this way the geographical positional data is stored relating to the location of the underground cable, and is retrieved for relocation of the cable. <IMAGE>
