PURPOSE: An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to automatically control the air conditioner according to the increase and decrease of the number of persons by installing an infrared ray-detecting sensor to the air conditioner, storing the infrared rays of the room detected in an initial driving of the air conditioner by the infrared ray detecting sensor, comparing the infrared rays of the room detected in driving the air conditioner with the stored infrared rays, and automatically controlling the discharging amount and direction of the air conditioner to the variation. CONSTITUTION: A vertical air conditioner comprises an infrared ray-detecting sensor(11) installed to a left and right movable louver of the air conditioner and a microcomputer(13) controlling the driving method of the air conditioner according to the infrared rays detected by the infrared ray-detecting sensor.
