PURPOSE: An antimicrobial composition containing dioctahedral smectite which detoxicates bacteria, a toxic substance produced from the bacteria or the like is provided. The dioctahedral smectite has no toxicity, is harmless to a human body and has abrasion properties. Therefore, it can be used in production of antimicrobial toothpaste. CONSTITUTION: An antimicrobial composition for external use contains dioctahedral smectite as an active ingredient. The antimicrobial toothpaste composition also contains dioctahedral smectite as an active ingredient and as an abrasive component. For an example, 10g of dioctahedral smectite is mixed with 20g of glycerin, 20g of sorbitol, 48g of water, 1g of sodium alginate and 1g of sodium lauryl sulfate to produce antimicrobial toothpaste.
